Let’s bring it down to a whole different level with this throwback from 2003. I haven’t shared much of James Holden’s work, so I figured I would start with my favorite compilation of his. I enjoy this one the most because it lies exactly halfway between his experimental side and his commercially popular material. James’ creativity shines at both ends, however this compilation is the most complete because it blends tracks from across the entire spectrum.

The first mix is definitely more melodic and danceable, while the second one verges on eccentric. Favorites from Disc 1 include the beautiful intro The Difference It Makes, Oshawa, All Together, and the amazing Real. I have never been able to enjoy the vocals from Do What You Want, but the two versions of Nathan Fake’s Outhouse certainly make up for that. PQM’s You Are Sleeping is a mesmerizing classic release from Yoshitoshi Recordings. The last two songs from the disc set up the second disc perfectly, as they dial up the sonal intensity. Disc 2 is a little darker in mood and the uniqueness of each individual track really stands out. Tracks like Colours, Hayling, Lifeformation, and Forme are all exceptional. Others such as The Wheel, Black Acid, and Ghetto Server are perfect examples showcasing the complex medley of sound that Holden brings with this album.

If you are looking for a journey through an electronic dreamland, James Holden is the captain for you. This album encompasses so many different aspects of electronic dance music in one balanced package. Disc 1 has more structure and consistency to it, so that is my preferred mix out of the two. I have listened to it repeatedly, and I am still hearing new sounds which were previously unheard. I also find it amazing how James is able to build so much tension without using big breakdowns. The mixing (primarily done using Pro Tools) is seamless. Oftentimes I would start listening to the album and before I knew it, I would be halfway through it without noticing any track changes. The Balance series has seen 19 releases so far, and I believe this is the best one. Take your time and give this a few listens, there are enough colors on this pallet for you to explore over and over again. If you enjoy this album and are looking for something even more intricate, check out At the Controls, which came out in 2006. Balance 005 was released on EQ Recordings from Australia, begin your journey here:

This summer has flown by with the quickness, and the corresponding summer season at club Space in Ibiza is now also coming to an end. Here is the music from one of the last nights at Space, mixed together by one of their long-standing residents, Markus Schulz. There are lots of Global DJ Broadcast favorites in here as well as some newer stuff from Markus’ repertoire, including several remixes of his new Dakota tracks. I especially like the last 45 minutes of the set, which just happens to contain one of my favorite Schulz mashups, Universal Hypercombo. The KhoMha remix of Hey Boy, Hey Girl is also a beast of an intro and it sets the tone right. I’m dying to know the ID of track 8, as well as track 16. This performance is pretty typical by Markus Schulz standards, and he keeps the energy high through the entire thing. Of course I always dream of a mix with completely unreleased stuff, but Markus still does a great job regardless. The official closing party takes place on October 2nd this weekend, and that one will feature many performers, including Armin van Buuren, Fedde le Grande, Markus himself, and many more. Check out the last night of Markus’ residency at Space (for this summer) below.

The classics showcase put together every year by Markus Schulz is always my favorite episode of the Global DJ Broadcast. Here we have the 2009 edition and it is amazing from start to finish. This thing is packed with some of the best progressive trance from the past couple of decades. If you follow closely with these classics shows, you will recognize some familiar songs that have been repeated here and there. When you see tracks like Blueberry, Eighties, The White Room, and Into the Dawn show up on multiple ‘classic’ mixes, you know they must be good. Some tracks which I loved hearing were My Lexicon, A Break In the Clouds, Rendezvous, and the dreamy I Know You’re Gone. Take a listen below, Markus has done another excellent job putting together this timeless mix.

Future Sound of Egypt 200 Live

For fans of uplifting trance, it doesn’t get any better than this. The Future Sound of Egypt label puts out primarily melodic trance, and it is led by the talented duo of Aly & Fila. Let’s not beat around the bush, there are more epic breakdowns in here than in a Hollywood psychiatrist’s office. If that is not your cup of tea, then you will definitely not enjoy the following sets. Aly & Fila celebrated the 200th episode of their radio show by hosting a party at the Echo Temple in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and they invited several of their Egyptian label partners as well as a few guest DJs to spin alongside them. Everyone got about an hour to play, with Aly & Fila headlining for 2 hours. At the end of their set, they played the track 200, which was produced specifically for this event. Their set is the best, and John O’Callaghan’s comes in second with an array of sick mashups. Roger Shah plays his usual Island-style balearic trance, while Sied van Riel provides a little techy flavor with his performance. The rest of the sets by Bjorn Akesson, Philippe El Sisi, Arctic Moon and Mohamed Ragab are pure uplifting in nature, which are sure to provide the rush that this genre oftentimes manifests.

Aly & Fila – Future Sound of Egypt volume 1 (compilation album)
Future Sound of Egypt Day 2010

It seems like Kaskade’s popularity has really skyrocketed this year, which has led to many invitations for him to share his music with the people. One such instance cropped up earlier this month, where Kaskade was asked to provide a set for BBC 1 Radio’s Essential Mix. Here is that set, with Kaskade banging out 2 hours of all his favorite songs at the moment. I have to admit, there is a lot of cheesy popular stuff in here, but then again his sets have always been comprised of pop-house. His current style almost makes me miss his older, more chill stuff. Despite of this, the mix he put together is still pretty fun to listen to. You won’t find many exclusive tracks in here, but it’s mixed well and has a nice bounce to it. Some artists use the EM as a means of introducing new material, while others see it as an opportunity to demonstrate what they can do in a live performance. Kaskade has definitely chosen the path of the latter, and I think this is a great representation of his club-oriented sound.

Tytanium Sessions 100 Live

Okay, I know I’m a little bit late on this one but this event was too big not to share. Tytanium Sessions is Sean Tyas’ weekly radio show, and his newly instituted record label is similarly titled Tytanium Recordings. By following this two step formula for success, Sean has steadily left his imprint on the trance scene through his high energy mixes and his label’s few yet solid releases. The 100th episode of his show was celebrated with a  3 day tour which started in Montreal and ended up in New York City, with a pit stop along the way at Dream in Miami. These big parties featured guest DJs such as Simon Patterson, Arnej, Tom Colontonio, Sied van Riel, W&W, John O’Callghan, as well as some local talent. Even Sean’s little brother Ryan got in the mix at the New York event held in Webster Hall. There are plenty of reworks and edits in these sets, all encompassed by driving, uplifting tracks in typical Tyas fashion. Live performances are also scattered here and there, and party goers at the Montreal party were treated to a nice back 2 back set with Sean Tyas and Simon Patterson. I like Simon Patterson’s solo set the most, but all of them are equally impressive. Kudos to Tom Colontonio for closing with Scooter’s Fuck the Millennium (a true throwback) and congratulations to Mr. Tyas for reaching the centennial mark. I hope your label enjoys the same success as your radio show. Download links are available at the bottom of the post.

Tytanium Sessions Alpha (compilation album)

Thank God for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mixes, the most dependable radio segment that has been around for an incredible 18 years. Here is a show from 2001, and it features DJ Tiesto on the decks. You can say all you want about this guy, but it’s hard to discredit his DJ skills from early on in his career. This mix is significant because it is Tiesto’s first appearance on the show, marking the first of many mixes to come. At this time in Tiesto’s career, he had just released his debut artist album In My Memory, and there are several songs from that album found in this mix. Lethal Industry and Suburban Train are easily recognizable, however I had completely forgotten about Tiesto’s great collaboration with Junkie XL on Obsession until I re-listened to this set. Another gem is the old school Windsider mashup of Kosheen’s Hide U with Tiesto’s Flight 643. Overall this mix is pretty progressive, which I’m assuming is what Radio 1 listeners were used to at that time. For those looking for the full-on trance sound, you may want to look at some of his other live sets.

The reunification of Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden has resulted in many great things, including this new compilation album. When I first listened to this, I was not sure of what to expect. By the time I finished with both discs, I was pleasantly surprised with what I heard. This is a very interesting compilation which involves a wide variety of music. This is not your typical single-genre mix album because you get a little bit of everything in here. House, techno, trance, and glitch are all on the menu, and G&D serve it up in two fun mixes. The tracklists do include some older songs, but everything works well together. The first disc starts off with a nice mashup of Beautiful Things with the Barnes & Heatcliff remix of TyDi’s Good Dream. This sets the mood for the remainder of the disc, as we get a heavy dose of funk and techno. Remixes of two older G&D productions featuring Jan Burton make their way in here, along with an eccentric remix of As the Rush Comes. Starting from Duca’s Bum Tras and on, the second half of this mix is my favorite part of this album. Productions by Umek, Mr. Blink, and Tiesto really keep things bouncing along nicely. Disc 2 is just as funky as the first, although there is a bigger electro influence in this one. There are a handful of G&D productions in this mix, including remixes of Flying Blind and Tracking Treasure Down. There are also two mashups, one of Let Go and the Arty remix of Synapse Dynamics, and the other one is the Dust in the Control Room banger. Tunes by Dada Life, D-Wayne vs Jacob van Hage, Funkagenda, and Adam K complete  the rest of the mix in true electro-fashion. The only track that seems out of place is the last Winter Kills song, and although it is a nice closing number, it doesn’t cohere very well with the 2nd half of disc 2. That song aside, the rest of the album flows well and it provided me with a nice change of pace. Check out this multifaceted compilation below.

It has been 2 years since the last Sound of Garuda compilation album, so let’s see what Gareth has in store for us with Chapter 2 of this series. While the 2009 album was mainly a retrospective mix CD, this new one contains completely fresh tracks. The format has also been shortened down to 1 CD, which is more appropriate considering the content. Several of these songs fit in perfectly with the Garuda sound, including Michael Jay Parker’s Canberra, Day Break by Ben Gold and Jonas Stenberg, and of course the two collaborations with Gareth Emery. Mansion and Flash are certainly highlights of this album, but Triarchy’s Replication is the clear winner for me. I’m not a big fan of the new Filo & Peri song, however the Daniel Kandi remix of the other vocal track in this album is solid. If you missed out on the first album, click out the link below the music. Here is what Gareth has to say about his new compilation:

This year, I feel our little label really has gone from strength to strength, which is why for the first time ever I’ve been able to put together an album full of totally exclusive, never-before-heard tracks, all of which were produced specifically for this project. I’m happy to feature many new artists who are appearing on Garuda for the first time, as well as some more familiar names, and of course, there are also several new tracks by me on the album, written in collaboration with two of the UK’s finest young producers: Ben Gold and Ashley Wallbridge.

I’d like to briefly thank everyone involved in the project: the artists, our partners Be Yourself Music, our fantastic Garuda team, and of course, the army of fans throughout the world keeping the Garuda sound alive week in, week out.

Thank you for supporting our music and I hope you enjoy it.
