Hello friends, I hope you all are enjoying the new year so far. For today, let’s go back to 2009 for an Essential Mix put together by Sander van Doorn. I believe 2009-2010 were the last couple of years in which Sander played mostly techy tunes before he changed up his style. He has always been known for playing quality stuff regardless of the genre, however recently it seems like he has been bitten by the electro bug as his sets feature considerably more electro-house. I prefer his older style more, but you can’t blame a guy for diversifying his sound. This mix has 5 SvD productions/remixes, including the very hot Bliksem made under his revived Purple Haze alias. The SvD remix of The Killers’ Spaceman was also another big jam in 2009, as was Bastillon towards the end of the year. Some other favorites of mine are Sasha’s remix of Jetstream and Marco V’s Digital Enemy. Markus’ Chinook was another monster and the Simmons & Machiavelli remix of Omen is another wild one. 2009 was also the breakthrough year for Ummet Ozcan, a talented Doorn Records producer, and his mix of Ronald van Gelderen’s Backstabberzz can be found at the end of the show. You will find Sander’s usual crisp and flawless mixing throughout this set as he starts with house and ends with trance. It’s a good thing we still have these older SvD mixes to fall back on because the tracklists are money and the performances are exceptional. Take a listen below to hear a great mix from one of my favorite DJs.

Here is an enjoyable little party mix from British producer/DJ Michael Woods. This Essential Mix is a nice year-end compilation of Michael’s favorite tunes from 2011. Although there are a few mind-numbingly overplayed tracks in here, the finished product is still a fun and entertaining listen. Don’t expect much depth to this, what Mr. Woods provides is an expert look at the best commercial house from the past year. This plays along exactly like one of his live sets, which means the energy is high as he keeps the party bumpin.

This week we travel back in time with The Warehouse Project to hear a set from the legendary DJ John Digweed. The Warehouse Project was created in 2006 and soon developed into one of the hottest club events in the UK. A year later, right after Digweed released volume 3 of his Transitions series, he was asked to play at the underground car park underneath the Piccadilly train station in Manchester. What resulted from this night is an excellent live set, and it was broadcasted as an Essential Mix towards the end of that year. It’s time to get deep and proggy as Digweed plays some special tunes, including outstanding tracks by System 7, Kaliber, and Popof. In this set you will also find many of the usual producers supported by Digweed, such as Maxime Dangles, Dusty Kid, and of course Nick Muir. You gotta love live recordings like this one because the energy from the crowd is contagious. Take a listen below to one of Diggers’ best Essential Mixes.

John Digweed – Essential Mix 2010

During the second to last week in October of this year, the annual Amsterdam Dance Event festival took place in 52 venues across the city of Amsterdam. ADE is very similar to Miami’s Winter Music Conference, in that they both include DJ workshops, demonstrations, interviews, and of course live performances for the thousands of visitors. Sander van Doorn is one of those DJs that has been tearing up dance floors around the world for quite a while now. Here is is solo set from the first day of the ADE festival this year, recorded from the Escape party by BBC Radio’s Essential Mix. He also had a back to back set with Ferry Corsten, but that one is not as impressive. I like this mix because it is very similar to what he played when he was down here in San Diego a few weekends ago. I heard many of the same songs live, including Rocket Fuel, Bang Bang, Maximal Crazy, Alive, and of course all of the new tracks from his new album. The Matteo DiMarr rework of Radiohead’s Creep is also downright amazing. As usual the mixing is flawless, and I have come to expect nothing less from Sander. He has, however, seemed to venture towards more of an electro inclination, which I do not prefer but cannot complain about. This set is still pretty awesome and it plays well from start to finish.

It’s time to switch gears for a moment with today’s throwback set. Whenever I’m in the mood to get funky, I usually play some techno or house music. One particular that always comes to mind is Umek, the father of Solvenian techno. This guy has been doing his thing for quite some time now, and he has amassed a large following of fans. In 2007, he began developing the 1605 Music Therapy group, which now serves as a production platform for many artists. Here is his very first Essential Mix, and he shows us how to properly blend techno and minimal house tunes into a dark, twisted set. The mix starts off pretty chill, but it gets pretty crazy by the time you reach the end. I have always been a fan of the groovy beats that techno provides, and there are many of those type of songs in here. If I had to choose a favorite tune, it would probably be the very sexy remix of Eurasia by Gui Boratto, although the Tocadisco remix of Marathon is also pretty sweet. I’m not a techno master by any means, but I know when a mix is put together properly and this one fits the bill. If you enjoy wonderful basslines like I do, you wil definitely have fun with this Umek mix.

Great interview with Umek and Carl Cox:

I’ve been listening to a lot of work from JOC lately, so let’s revisit one of his mixes from a few years ago. In 2008, John’s career was already well underway, as he had major exposure on the Discover and Armada labels. I was first introduced to him through his work with John Askew and Bryan Kearney, and his signature pounding style won me over instantly. His Subculture radio show began towards the end of 2006, and the first time I heard him spin live was in 2008 at Monster Massive in Los Angeles. In the summer of that year, he was invited to play his first (and so far only) Essential Mix on BBC1 Radio. This set is one of my favorite pieces of work that John has put together because it showcases all of his talents. In here you will find great examples of his production work and remixing skills, all mixed together into a complete package. There are way too many good songs in here to name, but I can assure you all of them are bangin’. Listen below as John plays some of the best from 2008.

Kaskade – Essential Mix (9-9-2011)

It seems like Kaskade’s popularity has really skyrocketed this year, which has led to many invitations for him to share his music with the people. One such instance cropped up earlier this month, where Kaskade was asked to provide a set for BBC 1 Radio’s Essential Mix. Here is that set, with Kaskade banging out 2 hours of all his favorite songs at the moment. I have to admit, there is a lot of cheesy popular stuff in here, but then again his sets have always been comprised of pop-house. His current style almost makes me miss his older, more chill stuff. Despite of this, the mix he put together is still pretty fun to listen to. You won’t find many exclusive tracks in here, but it’s mixed well and has a nice bounce to it. Some artists use the EM as a means of introducing new material, while others see it as an opportunity to demonstrate what they can do in a live performance. Kaskade has definitely chosen the path of the latter, and I think this is a great representation of his club-oriented sound.

Thank God for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mixes, the most dependable radio segment that has been around for an incredible 18 years. Here is a show from 2001, and it features DJ Tiesto on the decks. You can say all you want about this guy, but it’s hard to discredit his DJ skills from early on in his career. This mix is significant because it is Tiesto’s first appearance on the show, marking the first of many mixes to come. At this time in Tiesto’s career, he had just released his debut artist album In My Memory, and there are several songs from that album found in this mix. Lethal Industry and Suburban Train are easily recognizable, however I had completely forgotten about Tiesto’s great collaboration with Junkie XL on Obsession until I re-listened to this set. Another gem is the old school Windsider mashup of Kosheen’s Hide U with Tiesto’s Flight 643. Overall this mix is pretty progressive, which I’m assuming is what Radio 1 listeners were used to at that time. For those looking for the full-on trance sound, you may want to look at some of his other live sets.

This week’s throwback artist has had many posts on this blog due to the high number of quality sets he has played throughout his career. This particular Essential Mix was made in 1997, which means it is about 14 years old. I was not yet into dance music back then, so I did not recognize a lot of these songs on first listen. Tracks like Flaming June, Forbidden Fruit, Words, and Netherworld were familiar, but everything else was new to my ears. I am however, able to identify several of these artists who are still producing today, including Mac Zimms, Digital Blonde, BT,  and Paul Oakenfold. It’s great to know that they have been in the game for such a long time, and their dedication to the music is inspiring. I’m not sure if Andy Ling is still making stuff, but his two remixes in this set are impressive. One thing I will mention is Paul’s liberal use of the flanging effect that you can hear throughout this throwback. I guess mixers weren’t as advanced back then so there wasn’t much variety in usable effects. Damn, I really miss this old style that Paul used to bang out. It’s really too bad he doesn’t play like this anymore, but at least we have these relics to fall back on. Check out this finely crafted flashback below…
