The New Year’s eve celebrations continue with this performance by Markus Schulz. For this year’s party, he was invited to play at the Metro Theater in Sydney, Australia. Markus headlined the event and spun alongside Thomas Knight, MaRLo, and Nick Arbor as they brought in the new year together. This tracklist is packed with great songs and it paints an impressive picture of the direction Coldharbour Recordings is headed. Numerous productions by Khomha, Beat Service, and of course Dakota show how hot the Global DJ Broadcast has become. Markus’ Universal Hypercombo mashup has been my favorite this past year, so it is the highlight of this mix for me. The ID immediately right after that (Track 11 from Transmission Digital Madness Set) is also massive. At the end of the broadcast there is an extra three-track mix, which includes Johnny Yono’s Fairfax, one my favorites at the moment. What a great start to kick off 2012 for the Global DJ Broadcast, I hope you enjoy this partial recordings of Markus’ set from the night.

The Together As One party thrown by GoVentures has become a staple New Year’s eve party here in Southern California. At the end of 2009, on a night that featured music from David Guetta, John Digweed, Dubfire, Marcus Schossow, Kaskade, and Sander Kleinenberg, Markus Schulz’ set was easily one of the better ones. Here is the recording of his performance from Los Angeles, played on a world tour episode of the Global DJ Broadcast. Markus plays plenty of hits from 2009, including some of my favorites like his reconstruction of Stranger to Stability, Brace Yourself, Pong, and Mainstage. Big parties like these usually call for a lot of crowd favorites, and I’m sure many people were pleased to hear the mashups On a Metropolis Day and Lost Vocal Connection. I wasn’t there for that this party, but many of my friends told me Markus played the best set. Check out the official video underneath the music.

Global DJ Broadcast World Tour Ruby Skye NYE 2010

It has been an excellent month for the Global DJ Broadcast and there is no better way to end it than with the annual Classics episode. 2011 was a hot year for Markus Schulz, and he concludes it with this special show. In this mix you will find a true collection of throwbacks, with the majority of the songs produced in the 90’s (only 8 songs in here were made after 2000). Jam & Spoon’s Odyssey to Anyoona goes all the way back to 1994, and the intro track Paladian Dawn was produced over 16 years ago in 1995. Similar to the 2005 Classics showcase, this episode contains vintage oldies like Matt Darey’s Game Master, Remember Magnetic North, and Tilt’s Courtyard rework of Robert Miles’ Children. This year’s show also includes Sasha’s Xpander and the Nalin & Kane remix of Lustral’s Everytime, except in the 2005 episode these two were mashed up together splendidly. Of course Probspot’s Blueberry made it into the tracklist again, further cementing it as one of the greatest progressive tunes of all time. My favorite segment is when Markus mixes from First Time into Xpander and then into Blueberry, what an awesome three song combo. Silver Bath and Remember when Oakenfold produced Skin on Skin while he was in the group Grace, or when Ferry Corsten released Galaxia under the Moonman alias? If you do, you will certainly enjoy the following set as Markus skillfully brings us back to the late 90’s.

Global DJ Broadcast – Classics Episode 2011
01 Sunday Club – Paladian Dawn (Markus Schulz Intro Edit)
02 Grace – Skin on Skin (Orange Mix)

If Markus Schulz keeps throwing it down, I’m gonna keep posting them up. Here is another live mix from Mr. Coldharbour, recorded live last month at Marquee in Las Vegas. This upscale, cozy little club has a limited dance floor, however I’m sure Markus kept everyone in the entire venue on their feet with this set. The tracklist is light on the fluff and heavy on the bangers, which always seems to result in a good night. I love both versions of the Chemical Brothers’ Hey Boy, Hey Girl, and all of the mashups are legit. Other notable tracks include The Plank Effect, Magnetik, and all of the unknown IDs. This night’s music was recorded and broadcasted on last week’s Global DJ Broadcast as this month’s world-tour episode, check it out here.

The classics showcase put together every year by Markus Schulz is always my favorite episode of the Global DJ Broadcast. Here we have the 2009 edition and it is amazing from start to finish. This thing is packed with some of the best progressive trance from the past couple of decades. If you follow closely with these classics shows, you will recognize some familiar songs that have been repeated here and there. When you see tracks like Blueberry, Eighties, The White Room, and Into the Dawn show up on multiple ‘classic’ mixes, you know they must be good. Some tracks which I loved hearing were My Lexicon, A Break In the Clouds, Rendezvous, and the dreamy I Know You’re Gone. Global DJ Broadcast Classics 2005
Global DJ Broadcast Classics 2010

I have many random sets lined up as throwbacks to share, but I couldn’t stop listening to this one earlier in the week so here is this week’s winner. This is an older episode of Markus’ Global DJ Broadcast which was played on June 30, 2005. The actual recording is from an event at club Air, the UK homebase of Godskitchen since 2000. The mix opens up with three nice and deep into tracks by Matthew Dekay vs. The Proluctors and Antidote. The Elevation remix of Language is sweet too, although I still prefer the original by Hammer & Bennett. A couple of more tracks in and Markus plays Air For Life, a track which was a massive hit in 2005, especially in the British Isles where it came from. Things carry on beautifully with Ice Beach, an impressive production by Arcane, or Niklas Harding. Around this time Markus had a few collaborations with Airwave, and one of the new tracks from his Without You Near album was featured in this set, titled Ballymena. Two other songs from that album, First Time and Without You Near, also make their way into this mix, with Gabriel & Dresden and Funabashi on the remixes, respectively. You will also hear a track by Guardians of the Earth, and interesting duo of Los Angeles-based producer Michael Olson and vocalist Jes Brieden. At the end of the mix we get some additional productions by Gabriel & Dresden, Airwave, and Funabashi. I like the first half of the set more than the second; Markus really opened up with some beautiful tunes that I would love to have experienced live.

Markus Schulz – Live Godskitchen At Air in Birmingham (June 25, 2005)
01 Matthew Dekay vs. The Proluctors – Bad
02 Antidote – Come Alive
03 Hammer & Bennett – Language (Elevation Remix)
04 David West – Carrier
05 Above & Beyond vs. Andy Moor – Air For Life
06 Matthew Dekay vs. The Proluctors – The Deep Show
07 Özgür Can – Connected (Santiago Nino Dub Tech Mix)
08 Niklas Harding Presents Arcane – Ice Beach
09 Markus Schulz Featuring Airwave – Ballymena
10 Jaytech – Music 101 (The Flash Brothers Remix)
11 Markus Schulz and Departure with Gabriel & Dresden – Without You Near (Gabriel & Dresden Mix)
12 Markus Schulz – First Time (Funabashi Remix)
13 Guardians Of The Earth – Starchildren (Remix)

I wasn’t kidding when I said this would be the Summer of Schulz. Almost exactly one year ago, Markus Schulz put together a sunrise set for us and all of our early summer mornings. He has done this a few times throughout the history of the Global DJ Broadcast, and this year’s episode came out right on cue. I really enjoy listening to these because it gives Markus a chance to play his older style of music, which is more chill and less in-your-face. Don’t get me wrong, I am a devoted fan of his big room sets, but sometimes it’s nice to listen to songs that have more depth and aren’t immediately appreciated. I believe this is all a part of the growth and development of musical taste. As one dives into a new genre of music, it’s easier to get into the more commercial tracks. After going through thousands of new songs and venturing into other styles, a person’s preferences will naturally have shifted. In my case, the interest in big breakdowns and catchy vocals has been replaced by the pursuit of complex, original material. The bad news is there’s a lot of uninteresting stuff being produced today which makes it harder to find the good shit. Fortunately, sets like this one bring back that older progressive feel that relies on intricacy for its substance and quality.

This year’s Sunrise Mix starts off with a great intro by Pink Floyd. Wish You Were Here is one of my favorite PF albums, and David Gilmour’s guitar solo in Shine On is a fitting start for the theme of this mix. Markus then goes on to play some very appropriate chill out tunes, although this edition sounds a bit darker and carries more energy than last year’s. Standout tracks include Estiva’s Les Fleurs, Biscayne by Elevation, and the MS remix of Mark Otten’s Tranquility. Two of my favorite Coldharbour tracks are also found on here, and they are Probspot’s Blueberry and the original version of Rex Mundi’s Opera of Northern Ocean. The Lentos dub of Vision is the one repeat song found in both mixes, but I have no problem hearing it again because it is beautiful and very fitting. The Arty remix of Absolute Reality is also ACE, so make sure you check out the big room recon towards the end of the set. I do prefer last year’s track selection a tiny bit more, but only because it’s slightly better suited for a sunrise (think more melodic and more dreamy). It is without a doubt Markus has seen some of the most inspirational sunrises over there in Ibiza, and I’m glad he has once again taken the time to lay out his experiences in a mix. Check out the 2011 sunrise mix below; the 2010 mix is linked underneath.

Ibiza Sunrise set 2010

God damn I love these World Tour episodes of the Global DJ Broadcast. There are few things in life that are more satisfying to me than live mixing, especially when it’s done professionally by the right hands. I am grateful to Markus for recording these shows and I think more DJs who have radio programs should do the same thing. The only downside to these episodes is the limited length, and we only get to hear the first third of Markus’ 6 hour set. This is especially discouraging because Markus is known for bustin out the good shit towards the end of the night, where only the righteous and most deserving of fans are treated to his secret playbook of mind-blasting tunes. I guess it makes sense for Markus to play all of the popular crowd-pleasers first, but unfortunately we as listeners of his show don’t get to experience the new, unreleased stuff. It would have been more special if Markus used the last two hours of his set as this episode, but I guess I can’t ask for too much. The first two hours of this night were pretty solid, as exhibited by this tracklist. My favorite part of this show is the ID for his mashup of Universal Nation and Sasha Carassi’s Hypercombo. I have been waiting for this ID for a while, and am glad he finally revealed the name of the mystery track. If anybody knows if the entire set was recorded, please let me know because I would love to get my hands on that gem.

It feels like a Coldharbour kinda week so here is another fine piece of mixing from Markus Schulz. If you haven’t listened to this set yet, I suggest you check it out below. Every month Markus graciously records one of his tour sets and broadcasts it as one of his weekly radio shows. This month he has shared with us his set from Vision nightclub in Chicago, Illinois. The tracklist is very similar to the one he played in Las Vegas, so this set actually brings back some great memories for me. Caress 2 Impress is really tearing shit up as an opener, and I think I smell another Dakota tune in track #3. Check out these awesome two hours from that night’s 4 hour set.

Here’s a nice little video to go along with this night’s event:

Happy new year! I hope you all had a fun and eventful night to welcome in 2011. I spent mine here in San Diego at a great local party with a soundtrack provided by Moby and Ferry Corsten. Since I ended things last year with a set from Markus Schulz, I thought it would be fitting to begin this year the same way. It works out well because today’s Global DJ Broadcast episode is the recorded NYE set from San Francisco’s Ruby Skye. Markus has aired many of his world tour episodes from this location because there is something about that club that brings out the best in him. The mix begins about 10 seconds right before midnight and kicks off with the ever so popular New Year’s Day song by U2. From there Markus bangs it out for freaking 5 hours, but unfortunately we only get the first two from this broadcast. It would be sweet if someone could share with me the last part of the night because most of this tracklist looks like the normal stuff he’s been playing. But from what I’ve heard from friends, the set from 2am-5am was when it got crazy. Even so, there are still a lot of nice tunes from 2010 found in this mix, including my favorites Sky Traffic, Pollinator, the Barnes & Heatcliff remix of New World, and a sick, sick remix of Universal Nation. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to this party, but I had a fun night regardless and I’m just glad I started the new year off right.

postscript- the new Dakota album is gonna be craaaaaaazzzzzzzzzy!
