Markus Schulz Live at The Metro Theater (NYE 2011)

The New Year’s eve celebrations continue with this performance by Markus Schulz. For this year’s party, he was invited to play at the Metro Theater in Sydney, Australia. Markus headlined the event and spun alongside Thomas Knight, MaRLo, and Nick Arbor as they brought in the new year together. This tracklist is packed with great songs and it paints an impressive picture of the direction Coldharbour Recordings is headed. Numerous productions by Khomha, Beat Service, and of course Dakota show how hot the Global DJ Broadcast has become. Markus’ Universal Hypercombo mashup has been my favorite this past year, so it is the highlight of this mix for me. The ID immediately right after that (Track 11 from Transmission Digital Madness Set) is also massive. At the end of the broadcast there is an extra three-track mix, which includes Johnny Yono’s Fairfax, one my favorites at the moment. What a great start to kick off 2012 for the Global DJ Broadcast, I hope you enjoy this partial recordings of Markus’ set from the night.

Flashback Friday – Markus Schulz Live at Together As One (NYE 2009)

The Together As One party thrown by GoVentures has become a staple New Year’s eve party here in Southern California. At the end of 2009, on a night that featured music from David Guetta, John Digweed, Dubfire, Marcus Schossow, Kaskade, and Sander Kleinenberg, Markus Schulz’ set was easily one of the better ones. Here is the recording of his performance from Los Angeles, played on a world tour episode of the Global DJ Broadcast. Markus plays plenty of hits from 2009, including some of my favorites like his reconstruction of Stranger to Stability, Brace Yourself, Pong, and Mainstage. Big parties like these usually call for a lot of crowd favorites, and I’m sure many people were pleased to hear the mashups On a Metropolis Day and Lost Vocal Connection. I wasn’t there for that this party, but many of my friends told me Markus played the best set. Check out the official video underneath the music.

Gareth Emery – Live at The Warehouse Project

You gotta love these live extended sets because they really show what a DJ can do on the tables. On Boxing day of 2011, Gareth Emery played a 6 hour set at The Warehouse Project in Manchester, England, which is the city he currently works out of. This set is impressively long, however it seems like Gareth has been bitten by the popularity bug. While his performance is fun to listen to, there aren’t many too many new or unreleased tracks in here. I guess you have to spin all of the popular hits in a long set like this, but I wish he played with more originality like he used to towards the beginning of his career. However, this mix still has that signature Gareth Emery feel to it, and I do appreciate the selection of several techy tracks which balance with the electro nicely. There are plenty of tracks off his Garuda label, including work by Garuda artists Ben Gold, Craig Connelly, and Tritonal. There are also many mashups in here, with my favorite being the Super8 & Tab Helektra mashup of their own productions Elektra and Helsinki Scorchin. This recording is a great representation of Gareth’s work in 2011, but if you are still yearning for more from Mr. GTR, make sure you also check out episode 165 of his podcast for his  2011 year-mix.

Armin van Buuren – Live at SuperGlow

Happy 2012 everybody, I hope you all had a good break as we get ready to kick off the new year. I’m still in catch-up mode, so let’s keep the Armada train rolling along with this super long set from Mr. Armin van Buuren. Back in November, Armin played a 6 hour set at the DC Armory, a large arena which used to be the training facility for the DC National Guard. Recently it has been hosting a variety of entertainment events, including sports games, parties, and concerts. This particular event was thrown by DC”s Glow club/promotion company, hence the title SuperGlow. The tracklist is pretty standard fare, with all the usual ASOT hits incorporated into the mix. Special tunes in here include the Advanced Sleepwalkers mashup, the Oryon remix of Nanjing Express, and the In and Out of Love vs. Raw Deal mashup. The Gallery – Christmas Party 2011

The last 2011 party at The Gallery was a big one, as it featured several big names in its lineup. The main room at the Ministry of Sound Christmas party was stacked as it hosted Cosmic Gate, Markus Schulz, Rank 1, Jochen Miller, and Andy Moor. Nic and Bossi are currently on their Wake Your Mind tour, so their set was appropriately filled with songs from the new album. Pretty predictable, but very consistent. Andy Moor’s set was decent, with the track 3 ID and the 2011 rework of Air for Life as the highlights. My favorite set of the night is Markus’ because of the impressive tracklist. The mashups and IDs that he played really stand out as crowd pleasing moments. Closing out the night was a special back to back set featuring Rank 1 and Jochen Miller. Their song selection is great, however the mixing is a bit spotty. Solid planning, average execution. Nevertheless, it’s still pretty amazing to experience these back 2 back sets because you get double the creativity when the styles are compatible. Flashback Friday – Armin van Buuren Live at Red City 2005

In 2005 Armin van Buuren released his 2nd artist album Shivers and his A State of Trance radio program was well underway to becoming what it is today, the #1 source of trance music available to the general public.  Below is a nice set from the same year, recorded from the annual Red City music festival held on a beach in Eilat, Israel. This mix features several songs from his Shivers album, including the classic balearic tune Zocalo as the intro track. What I like about this set is the way Armin builds it up from start to finish, which is something I haven’t heard from him in a while. The first ten tracks or so are very low-key and progessive, the middle of the set gets pretty techy, and then the uplifting tunes are brought in at the end. I love this formula for planning sets, and I wish all DJ’s would follow this more often. One possible reason why Armin doesn’t do this anymore is because he is always the main act and usually has to play with more energy, or it could be due to the changing shift in audience expectations. It seems like nowadays most DJ’s like to play one banger after another, and that is what the crowd has come to expect. Has building sets become a lost art? I sure don’t hope so, but at least we have these older mixes to fall back on.

Jordan Suckley – Goodgreef Birthday at Sankeys

Since we are on the topic of UK trance, let’s take a listen to a mix from one of Britain’s rising stars, Jordan Suckley. In 2009 this youngster was signed to PFA and his career has taken off since then. Currently holding two residencies for Goodgreef and InsideOut XL, Jordan hits the decks regularly whenever is not producing. I love the energy he brings in his shows, and you can tell he has been influenced by the likes of Bryan Kearney, JOC, and Eddie Halliwell. For Halloween this year, Jordan joined a stellar lineup for Goodgreef’s 11th birthday party at Sankey’s in Manchester. The mixing in this set is on point, and the tracklist is very appropriate for a closing performance. Fans of tech trance will definitely appreciate this mix, check out the recording of his set below.

Trance Around the World 400

Say what you will about these three guys, it is hard to deny the loyalty they have to their fans. The connection Above & Beyond have with their supporters is one of the closest in this industry, and you can certainly feel that in their live performances. Fans of theirs return the love 200%, and this has made the Anjunabeats label one of the major players in the global trance scene. To celebrate the 400th episode of their Trance Around the World radioshow, Tony, Jono, and Paavo put on a great party at the Forum de Beyrouth in Lebanon. Alongside them played other DJs including Jaytech, Kyau & Albert, Gareth Emery, and Mat Zo. All of the performers played solid mixes, however the sets by Mat Zo and Kyau & Albert really stood out for me. Mat Zo’s was the most unique, and I love the variety of tracks that he played. Kyau & Albert’s set had the best flow, and I was pretty impressed with their tracklist as they mixed a good ratio of old and new songs. If anybody can figure out what song track 5 is, please let me know because it is a wicked track. Jaytech put on a standard but solid Anjunadeep set, and Above & Beyond also played up to their usual standards. I was a little disappointed with Gareth’s mix (too much electro for me), although he did play some sick mashups for all the party-goers in the audience. Overall the music from this party is comparable to that from TATW 350; there aren’t many surprises if you follow these artists consistently. Bryan Kearney Live at The Emporium

I hope everyone here in the US enjoyed their nice holiday weekend. I took a couple of weeks off just to relax, but now it’s time to get back to the music. There’s lots of good shit to catch up on, so let’s get right into it. Here is a live set from earlier this month by Bryan Kearney, recorded at The Emporium in Coalville, UK. These Passion parties are always stacked with great trance DJs, and they are very easily keeping the trance scene alive in Britain. Bryan is one of those DJs who maintains his style dependably, so you know that this set contains a lot of driving, thumping trance. There are a couple of interesting edits in this one, including a mashup of Whiteroom with Ferry’s Made of Love. Bonus points are awarded to Bryan for playing the old school If You Want Me by Warrior and the even older Matt Darey remix of Wizards of the Sonic from 1998. That Fuct Camera is also another fun song to hear, and Bryan closes things out with a nice remix of Ferry’s Beautiful. I have had a relatively low dose of trance lately, so listening to this set was a great way to get back into it.

Throwback Thursday John Digweed Live at The Warehouse Project 2007

This week we travel back in time with The Warehouse Project to hear a set from the legendary DJ John Digweed. The Warehouse Project was created in 2006 and soon developed into one of the hottest club events in the UK. A year later, right after Digweed released volume 3 of his Transitions series, he was asked to play at the underground car park underneath the Piccadilly train station in Manchester. What resulted from this night is an excellent live set, and it was broadcasted as an Essential Mix towards the end of that year. It’s time to get deep and proggy as Digweed plays some special tunes, including outstanding tracks by System 7, Kaliber, and Popof. In this set you will also find many of the usual producers supported by Digweed, such as Maxime Dangles, Dusty Kid, and of course Nick Muir.
