The Together As One party thrown by GoVentures has become a staple New Year’s eve party here in Southern California. At the end of 2009, on a night that featured music from David Guetta, John Digweed, Dubfire, Marcus Schossow, Kaskade, and Sander Kleinenberg, Markus Schulz’ set was easily one of the better ones. Here is the recording of his performance from Los Angeles, played on a world tour episode of the Global DJ Broadcast. Markus plays plenty of hits from 2009, including some of my favorites like his reconstruction of Stranger to Stability, Brace Yourself, Pong, and Mainstage. Big parties like these usually call for a lot of crowd favorites, and I’m sure many people were pleased to hear the mashups On a Metropolis Day and Lost Vocal Connection. I wasn’t there for that this party, but many of my friends told me Markus played the best set. Check out the official video underneath the music.

Global DJ Broadcast World Tour Ruby Skye NYE 2010

Happy 2012 everybody, I hope you all had a good break as we get ready to kick off the new year. I’m still in catch-up mode, so let’s keep the Armada train rolling along with this super long set from Mr. Armin van Buuren. Back in November, Armin played a 6 hour set at the DC Armory, a large arena which used to be the training facility for the DC National Guard. Recently it has been hosting a variety of entertainment events, including sports games, parties, and concerts. This particular event was thrown by DC”s Glow club/promotion company, hence the title SuperGlow. The tracklist is pretty standard fare, with all the usual ASOT hits incorporated into the mix. Special tunes in here include the Advanced Sleepwalkers mashup, the Oryon remix of Nanjing Express, and the In and Out of Love vs. Raw Deal mashup. Check out this 6 hour set from Armin’s Universal Religion tour in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C.

It’s time to switch gears for a moment with today’s throwback set. Whenever I’m in the mood to get funky, I usually play some techno or house music. One particular that always comes to mind is Umek, the father of Solvenian techno. This guy has been doing his thing for quite some time now, and he has amassed a large following of fans. In 2007, he began developing the 1605 Music Therapy group, which now serves as a production platform for many artists. Here is his very first Essential Mix, and he shows us how to properly blend techno and minimal house tunes into a dark, twisted set. The mix starts off pretty chill, but it gets pretty crazy by the time you reach the end. I have always been a fan of the groovy beats that techno provides, and there are many of those type of songs in here. If I had to choose a favorite tune, it would probably be the very sexy remix of Eurasia by Gui Boratto, although the Tocadisco remix of Marathon is also pretty sweet. I’m not a techno master by any means, but I know when a mix is put together properly and this one fits the bill. If you enjoy wonderful basslines like I do, you wil definitely have fun with this Umek mix.

Great interview with Umek and Carl Cox:

Here is a nice interview with DJ Tiesto, put together by Dutch TV station KRO. It focuses mainly on Tijs’ life throughout his career, starting from his teens all the way up to his current position. What I enjoyed the most are the truthful answers that Tijs provides when asked about his pilgrimage through the DJ world. He isn’t afraid to admit that he has changed, especially following his commercial success. While it may sound pretty douchey when he states he can now do whatever he pleases and can buy anything he wants, it’s hard to blame a guy for revelling himself when he started off with nothing. I also found it interesting (although a little neurotic) how he says Tijs is insecure as a person, but Tiesto is not. The bottom line is money does change people, and everyone has their own ways of adjusting to the fame and popularity. Tiesto used to care about others’ opinions about him, and now he does not. There are lots of cool comments from Ferry Corsten, Sander van Doorn, Fedde le Grande, and the legendary Ben Liebrand, as they all provide additional input from the DJ perspective. Whether you like him or not, Tiesto has definitely paid his dues, and he has earned the right to play whatever music he wants.

The annual Coachella music festival needs no introduction, and neither do these two talented gentlemen from London. When you combine both on a warm summer night along with 75,000 festival goers, the end result is nothing short of amazing. The cherry on top of the sundae is the spectacular visual effects show, which can be seen in the video underneath the music. The Chemical Brothers are known for their original productions, and their catalog dates all the way back to 1995 with their debut album Exit Planet Dust. In this set recorded live from Indio, California they played a wide selection of tracks from all of their albums. Their music is pretty timeless, so songs made 10 years apart still mix well with each other. Older tunes like Chemical Beats and Hey Boy Hey Girl feel right at home next to new ones like Don’t Think and Saturate. I am happy to see the beautiful Star Guitar and the ultra dreamy Swoon make their way into the performance, and it’s always nice to hear the voice of Noel Gallagher (of Oasis) in Setting Sun. The mix ends nicely with Believe, which features the vocals of Kele Okereke from Bloc Party. My only gripe with the mix that I downloaded is the quality of the recording. It lacks the punch that would have made this set an instant classic, so if anybody knows where I can find a version with better quality, please let me know.

The Electronic Family party hosted by Alda Events took place at the Amsterdam Forest on July 30th of this year. This gathering of trance enthusiasts was highlighted by 14 DJs, including Sied van Riel, Alex M.O.R.P.H., Simon Patterson, Leon Bolier, Gabriel & Dresden, Aly & Fila, Wippenberg, and Setrise. All 8 of these live sets were nice solo performances, but the feature presentations had to be the back 2 back sets put together by Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1, and Jochen Miller. It’s pretty rare to see this type of mixing these days, so I have uploaded the b2b sets down below. The quality of these rips isn’t very good, however I am still grateful they were recorded at all. If anyone knows where I can find mp3’s with higher bitrates, please let me know and I can replace these. The tracklists themselves are decent, but listening to these cannot replace the experience of seeing two DJ’s spinning live. I wish there were more b2b sets here in the US, it’s always great to see two DJs interacting with each other and the crowd at the same time.

Electronic Family 2011 after movie:

Okay, let’s take a little break from Mr. Coldharbour and switch gears to something more bright and cheerful. Here is the latest compilation put together by a truly seasoned DJ. It’s bouncy, it’s housey, it’s classic Robbie Rivera. The man has homes in Miami and Ibiza, so it’s not surprising that this album incorporates the Latin flavor of South Beach with the balaeric swing of Ibiza. Robbie even mixes in some popular electro selections along with some proggy trance, so the variety is definitely there. I know I have shared a lot of summer albums so far, but this one is certainly one of the most diverse in sound. My favorite tracks are Sebastian Weikum’s Adem and Save the Robot’s Red City, while the most creative songs are Pleasurekraft’s Carny and Sydney Samson’s Filter. Take a listen below to hear what Robbie has in store for this summer. You can also catch him on his Juicy Music radio show  which airs every Friday night.
