This summer has flown by with the quickness, and the corresponding summer season at club Space in Ibiza is now also coming to an end. Here is the music from one of the last nights at Space, mixed together by one of their long-standing residents, Markus Schulz. There are lots of Global DJ Broadcast favorites in here as well as some newer stuff from Markus’ repertoire, including several remixes of his new Dakota tracks. I especially like the last 45 minutes of the set, which just happens to contain one of my favorite Schulz mashups, Universal Hypercombo. The KhoMha remix of Hey Boy, Hey Girl is also a beast of an intro and it sets the tone right. I’m dying to know the ID of track 8, as well as track 16. This performance is pretty typical by Markus Schulz standards, and he keeps the energy high through the entire thing. Of course I always dream of a mix with completely unreleased stuff, but Markus still does a great job regardless. The official closing party takes place on October 2nd this weekend, and that one will feature many performers, including Armin van Buuren, Fedde le Grande, Markus himself, and many more. Check out the last night of Markus’ residency at Space (for this summer) below.

John O’Callaghan is one of my favorite trance DJs to hear live. His sets are always full of energy and the mixing is on point. His track selection is pretty consistent, with fast uplifting trance as the central theme. It seems like there is never a dull point in his mixes as the energy of every track flows well into the next. He commonly spins tracks from the Subculture, Discover, and Vandit labels, so you see many of those artists in his tracklists. Here we have two live mixes recorded a month apart from the club Cream in Ibiza.  The June 16th event was the opening party for this summer, and that event featured an epic lineup of Paul van Dyk, Sander van Doorn, and John O’Callaghan. The July event featured Eddie Halliwell and Above & Beyond along with JOC. Upcoming shows are scheduled for the next three Thursdays on September 8th, the 15th, and then 22nd. I do not have the tracklist to the July set, so please share it with me if you have it.

Carl Cox at Space: The Revolution

I was in the mood for some techno this Tuesday morning so I started playing this recently released album by Carl Cox. Carl is one of those dependable DJs where you always know what you’re going to get. His work spans across the entire spectrum from tech-house to techno with soul and tribal influences layered in between, and he always blends everything together in a tasteful manner. It seems like he has been doing his thing for ages , as his career has been around for as long as I have been alive. With such a storied history under his belt, he has undoubtedly played at thousands of clubs all around the world. One of these places is club Space in Ibiza, and he has previously released a couple of albums under the Space theme. This summer he and Space have reunited again and released this two disc album to celebrate his Revolution Tour. The first disc is labeled Space Classics, and it contains a lot of the vintage tunes Carl used to play at the club. The second disc is mixed with modern jams that Carl currently plays from his vast repertoire. If you get a chance to see him in Ibiza this summer, make sure you do so because he has already teamed up with notable DJs such as Umek, Dubfire, Moby, Mark Knight, Richie Hawtin, Fatboy Slim, and Marco Bailey to create some insane party nights.

I wasn’t kidding when I said this would be the Summer of Schulz. Almost exactly one year ago, Markus Schulz put together a sunrise set for us and all of our early summer mornings. He has done this a few times throughout the history of the Global DJ Broadcast, and this year’s episode came out right on cue. I really enjoy listening to these because it gives Markus a chance to play his older style of music, which is more chill and less in-your-face. Don’t get me wrong, I am a devoted fan of his big room sets, but sometimes it’s nice to listen to songs that have more depth and aren’t immediately appreciated. I believe this is all a part of the growth and development of musical taste. As one dives into a new genre of music, it’s easier to get into the more commercial tracks. After going through thousands of new songs and venturing into other styles, a person’s preferences will naturally have shifted. In my case, the interest in big breakdowns and catchy vocals has been replaced by the pursuit of complex, original material. The bad news is there’s a lot of uninteresting stuff being produced today which makes it harder to find the good shit. Fortunately, sets like this one bring back that older progressive feel that relies on intricacy for its substance and quality.

This year’s Sunrise Mix starts off with a great intro by Pink Floyd. Wish You Were Here is one of my favorite PF albums, and David Gilmour’s guitar solo in Shine On is a fitting start for the theme of this mix. Markus then goes on to play some very appropriate chill out tunes, although this edition sounds a bit darker and carries more energy than last year’s. Standout tracks include Estiva’s Les Fleurs, Biscayne by Elevation, and the MS remix of Mark Otten’s Tranquility. Two of my favorite Coldharbour tracks are also found on here, and they are Probspot’s Blueberry and the original version of Rex Mundi’s Opera of Northern Ocean. The Lentos dub of Vision is the one repeat song found in both mixes, but I have no problem hearing it again because it is beautiful and very fitting. The Arty remix of Absolute Reality is also ACE, so make sure you check out the big room recon towards the end of the set. I do prefer last year’s track selection a tiny bit more, but only because it’s slightly better suited for a sunrise (think more melodic and more dreamy). It is without a doubt Markus has seen some of the most inspirational sunrises over there in Ibiza, and I’m glad he has once again taken the time to lay out his experiences in a mix. Check out the 2011 sunrise mix below; the 2010 mix is linked underneath.

Ibiza Sunrise set 2010

Longtime readers of this blog know that I am not the biggest fan of electro-house, but I do like to share good music regardless of the genre. Despite my limited knowledge of electro on hand, Laidback Luke’s sets have always interested me. His mixing is solid, but his best attributes as a DJ are his remixing and editing skills. This guy puts out so many crossover tunes that it makes it easy for non-EDM listeners to get into it. His sets are always full of energy as he plays the latest that electro has to offer. Recently this summer, Luke has signed up for 5 crazy nights of fun at the legendary Cream in Ibiza. He is bringing his themed clubbing event to the White Isle, where guests are encouraged to dress up as super heroes, villains, and vixens as they party the night away. If you are visiting Ibiza this summer, the four remaining nights of this tour are July 28th, August 11th and 25th, and September 8th. Guest artists for this show include Fake Blood, Wolfgang Gartner, and Congorock. Check out these two mixes which were compiled to kick off this tour. There are plenty of trademark LBL reworks and mashups to keep you entertained.

Laidback Luke Cream Interview

Cream Ibiza 2009 – mixed by Sander van Doorn, Eddie Halliwell

While we are on the subject of hot summer residencies, let’s revisit some legendary parties that took place on the magical island of Ibiza. First we have to jump back to 2002, when Italian DJ/producer Mauro Picotto created his Meganite party concept at the Winter Music Conference in Miami. This club event brought out thousands of party-goers searching for that raw, uncut dance music. His events were  so successful that Mr. Lizard eventually had to bring this party to Ibiza. In 2004 he did just that, transforming the super club Privilege into one of the hottest venues on the island. Over the next few years, he brought in resident DJs such as Andrew Beyer, Chris Liebing, Marco Carola, and Misstress Barbara to keep the party going. For this week’s throwback, I have uploaded a two-disc Meganite album that came out in 2008, released on the Big In Ibiza label. The first disc features the freshest summer jams of 08, while the second one contains a variety of classic tunes that were played throughout the Meganite events. I thought this would be a great way to change up the pace a little bit; the tech-house/techno style of Mauro Picotto is one of the grooviest I have ever heard. There are numerous songs in here that are a joy to get lost in, especially Daniele Papini’s The Church of Nonsense, Komonster, Contaminato, and Gabry Ribetti’s remix of  Mehr Taub. Personally, I love that mechanical bounce that techno carries with it, and it sounds especially good when it’s mixed masterfully by one of the best.

DJ’s have started making their way onto the island of Ibiza for the start of the summer season. One of these DJs is Ferry Corsten, and he will be spinning at Sankeys first club in Ibiza, located in Playa d’en Bossa. Sankeys is a well known club based in Manchester, and this year they are expanding to Ibiza in the summer and then NYC later on. Ferry’s residency in Ibiza takes place every Tuesday night, starting on July 12th and ending on September 13th. His Full On Ferry show, revived from 2009, will feature many guest DJs, including Mat Zo, W&W, Kyau & Albert, Marco V, Cosmic Gate, Showtek, Michael Woods, BT, G&D, Aly & Fila, Sied van Riel, Rafael Frost, Lange, and Giuseppe Ottaviani. The list goes on and on, so you know it will be a special summer at Sankeys filled with many memorable back 2 back sets.

To celebrate the start of his residency, Ferry has released this compilation album. Here is a collection of assorted summer tunes, some of which you may already have heard. CD1 is okay, but I couldn’t really get into it until I heard Nitrogen by Deas & Lubica. The last two tracks in CD1 are good (especially the new Super8 & Tab), but the rest of the mix is a bit uninspiring. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m pretty sick of Yuri Kane’s Right Back. It was a bit annoying to hear Ferry play it again, especially after he included it in 2 out of 3 Once Upon A Night albums. Fortunately disc 2 is significantly better, and it contains many more interesting tracks. Save the Robot strikes again with their latest hit Compassion, and new songs by Michael Jay Parker and Virtual Vault keep the mix going strong. The flow is much smoother in the second disc, it almost sounded like Ferry was trying to force things too much in the first one. Modern remakes of Out of the Blue and Pocket Damage close out the album with style. While this album is a nice little preview of things to come, I can’t wait to hear some of those upcoming live sets. If you can make it out to Ibiza this summer, Tuesday nights at Sankeys are sure to be a fun time.

Sankeys Ibiza

Let’s fall back down the rabbit hole with the help of one of my favorite DJs at the moment, Markus Schulz. He has been on fire in the past two years, but it’s still important to take a worthwhile look back at what he has done in the past. I believe I will eventually upload all of his city compilations as throwbacks, but for now I am sharing with you the 2006 release of Ibiza. Every year when the weather heats up, Markus travels to the Baleric Islands to kick off the summer party season. In 2006 he decided to incorporate what he heard over there into a two disc compilation. What we get is an end result which was and still remains today, one of the best releases to come from Coldharbour Recordings.  Ibiza 06, Miami 05, and Coldharbour Selections 2004 are three of my favorite mix CDs put together by Markus. Both discs in this album just flow from start to finish with such an amazing drive that never lets up. This being an Ibiza themed album, there are plenty of summer grooves and relaxing guitar riffs to keep you captivated.

CD1 starts off with a great intro track by Ohmna, and you immediately get a sense of the island with the nice guitar work. Benya’s work in track 2 reminds me a lot of the stuff that Tucandeo has been putting out, and Jose Amnesia, who is famous for his summery style, provides a great vocal track with Jennifer Rene in song #3. The remainder of the CD keeps the incredible progressive journey going, especially with Niklas Harding & Funabashi and Progresia providing some really amazing productions (make sure you check out Shelter and Addictive). The rest of the tracks are very chill, and set the mood perfectly for the second disc. CD2 picks up right where CD1 ended, this time with a little bit more energy. The Hawk remix of The Fusion is very catchy, and Year Zero is a classic collaboration between Andy Moor and Orkidea. Nick Thompson’s Once Upon a Time and the Funabashi remix of Markus’ First Time are another pair of favorites with their space-like ambiance and spellbinding basslines. You may also recognize Kyau & Albert’s Kiksu, which was recently reworked this year and played quite often on Markus’ radio show. The album ends fittingly with a driving track by American producer Casey Keyworth, aka Breakfast.

The best part of this album is the overall sense of completeness that Markus brings to the table. The mixing is great; most segues last 20-30 seconds between tracks, which gives you the impression of songs seamlessly blending into each other. Markus mixes them together so naturally that you don’t know when the first track has ended and the second has begun. All of the tunes selected are deep and have that driving, hypnotic backbone which, let’s face it, many of today’s trance songs fail to provide. How good is the trance if it doesn’t put you in a trance? There are, however, some tracks that could be considered fillers, but even then they still fit quite well with the rest of the songs. While it’s not as perfect as the Coldharbour Sessions 2004 album, this release is as close to spotless as they come. Markus truly delivers with this compilation, and if you are looking for something a little bit deeper and darker without any help from the vocal cheese-shop, then you should really check out these two mixes below.

Ibiza Sunrise Set

Ahh yes, the weekend is here! To get a good jump on the situation, here is something I have been jamming to all week that I’d like to share with you. This set was recorded on August 3rd at Club Amnesia in Ibiza, and then broadcasted on Sirius XM radio earlier this month. I really love these live sets where DJs get to show off their mixing skills along with their crowd interactions. The attendees of this event got a cool surprise guest appearance by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, as she sang along with the Dash Berlin 4am remix of her hit with Armin, Not Giving Up On Love. The flow moves really well from one track to the next, and Armin sets up a very good summer-vibe with his mix. There aren’t many new, unreleased songs, but he definitely plays some great releases from this summer. I hope everyone has a great weekend, see you on the flipside.

About 6 years ago, Armin van Burren started his Universal Religion compilation series to showcase each summer’s hottest tracks. Recorded live from Ibiza, Spain at his Amnesia residency, each set represents the best in balearic trance. All of the previous chapters have been recorded live, and this latest installment shares the same format. What’s cool is that you get to hear the crowd reaction to the tracks being played, which really sets the mood for the CD. The way the albums capture the love for dance music is absolutely brilliant. If you listen to these mixes from start to finish, you  feel as if you are really in Amnesia as you experience the journey that Armin brings his crowds on.

So what exactly is universal religion? Obviously there is no such thing in this world (except for maybe the love of money), but Armin believes that music is the unifying obsession that can be found all across the globe. This is no joke; you can see it clearly with the 6 million listeners that tune in to his weekly ASOT shows. Regardless of what country, what race, or what religion the listener associates with, there is always one thing in common: their appreciation for dance music.  This is the point that Armin is trying to promote, and I could not agree more with him. I like the idea of a worldwide, consolidating concept, and music is definitely the easiest way to do so. I think I would find a lot of comfort in traveling around the world and partying with people who share the same interests in music as me. So let’s move onto the album…

There are two new AvB remixes on this album, as well as Gareth Emery’s remix of Armin’s Tuvan. There are also new tracks by Daniel Kandi, RAM, Nic Chagall, and cool colaborations between Roger Shah & Signum, and Lange & Andy Moor. If you like vocal tracks, you will definitely love this album as half of the album contains vocals. As always, Armin’s mixing is on point and flawless, and the songs flow seamlessly into each other. More than half of these tunes have been played on ASOTs already, but hearing them all together with the crowd noise in the background is great. My favorite new track from the album is this song: Espen Gulbrandsen vs. DJ Julian Vincent feat. Maria Nayler – Perfect Sky. The synths are dreamlike and the vocals match very well. Personally, I still like Chapter 2 the most, but this one has all the regular ASOT hits that everyone has come to enjoy. Please remember, these compilations are meant to be chill and relaxing, so don’t expect any hard hitters or anything with too much depth. Some might say the track selection is boring, but I think it is fitting considering the point of the album. The target audience is the entire world, and easy listening is the most widely accepted. I recommend playing this mix at the beach or poolside with some good headphones on, with a tasty brew within arm’s reach.
