I wasn’t kidding when I said this would be the Summer of Schulz. Almost exactly one year ago, Markus Schulz put together a sunrise set for us and all of our early summer mornings. He has done this a few times throughout the history of the Global DJ Broadcast, and this year’s episode came out right on cue. I really enjoy listening to these because it gives Markus a chance to play his older style of music, which is more chill and less in-your-face. Don’t get me wrong, I am a devoted fan of his big room sets, but sometimes it’s nice to listen to songs that have more depth and aren’t immediately appreciated. I believe this is all a part of the growth and development of musical taste. As one dives into a new genre of music, it’s easier to get into the more commercial tracks. After going through thousands of new songs and venturing into other styles, a person’s preferences will naturally have shifted. In my case, the interest in big breakdowns and catchy vocals has been replaced by the pursuit of complex, original material. The bad news is there’s a lot of uninteresting stuff being produced today which makes it harder to find the good shit. Fortunately, sets like this one bring back that older progressive feel that relies on intricacy for its substance and quality.

This year’s Sunrise Mix starts off with a great intro by Pink Floyd. Wish You Were Here is one of my favorite PF albums, and David Gilmour’s guitar solo in Shine On is a fitting start for the theme of this mix. Markus then goes on to play some very appropriate chill out tunes, although this edition sounds a bit darker and carries more energy than last year’s. Standout tracks include Estiva’s Les Fleurs, Biscayne by Elevation, and the MS remix of Mark Otten’s Tranquility. Two of my favorite Coldharbour tracks are also found on here, and they are Probspot’s Blueberry and the original version of Rex Mundi’s Opera of Northern Ocean. The Lentos dub of Vision is the one repeat song found in both mixes, but I have no problem hearing it again because it is beautiful and very fitting. The Arty remix of Absolute Reality is also ACE, so make sure you check out the big room recon towards the end of the set. I do prefer last year’s track selection a tiny bit more, but only because it’s slightly better suited for a sunrise (think more melodic and more dreamy). It is without a doubt Markus has seen some of the most inspirational sunrises over there in Ibiza, and I’m glad he has once again taken the time to lay out his experiences in a mix. Check out the 2011 sunrise mix below; the 2010 mix is linked underneath.
