The last 2011 party at The Gallery was a big one, as it featured several big names in its lineup. The main room at the Ministry of Sound Christmas party was stacked as it hosted Cosmic Gate, Markus Schulz, Rank 1, Jochen Miller, and Andy Moor. Nic and Bossi are currently on their Wake Your Mind tour, so their set was appropriately filled with songs from the new album. Pretty predictable, but very consistent. Andy Moor’s set was decent, with the track 3 ID and the 2011 rework of Air for Life as the highlights. My favorite set of the night is Markus’ because of the impressive tracklist. The mashups and IDs that he played really stand out as crowd pleasing moments. Closing out the night was a special back to back set featuring Rank 1 and Jochen Miller. Their song selection is great, however the mixing is a bit spotty. Solid planning, average execution. Nevertheless, it’s still pretty amazing to experience these back 2 back sets because you get double the creativity when the styles are compatible. Check out the music from the 2011 closing party from The Gallery at the Ministry of Sound in London below. Download links can be found at the bottom of the post.

The Emerald Isle has a well established trance community, with the popular John O’Callaghan leading the way. Following not too far behind him is Bryan Kearney, who plays a similar style of trance. Ever since their collaboration in 2006 on Exactly, both of these guys have seen their careers take off as they now play at numerous events all around the world. Last weekend at The Gallery in London, Bryan was asked to spin at the Plastic Fondu party which also featured DJs Lange, Mark Eteson, Protoculture, and Stonebridge. Here is a partial recording of his set from the night, and I gotta say it bumps pretty hard. If you like John O’Callaghan, you will definitely enjoy Bryan’s work because of their comparable tracklists. They often spin from the same group of producers, so you will see names like Simon Patterson, Sean Tyas, Neal Scarborough, and Activa show up often. In fact, JOC can be found on 5 tracks in this 60 minute set so you know how closely they work together. Highlights for me include their recent track Rawdiculous, the amazing Simon Patterson and Greg Downey mashup, and We’ll Never Die. Simon Patterson’s Us and Onova’s Platitude are also solid trance classics. I would love to hear Bryan throw it down live,  hopefully he comes back to California soon.

The International Departures radio show has been a highly successful means of entry into the music of Myon & Shane54. They are currently on their 87th episode, and this weekly broadcast usually showcases about an hour’s worth of new and classic tunes. Episode 87 is a special 2 hour recording of their set from the Ministry of Sound club in Malaysia, which took place on June 17th of this year at the Euphoria party in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Yellow fever is strong with these two Hungarians because they always seem to have many Asian cities on their tour schedule. Enjoy the oodles of mashups and edits in this one, which is a proven formula for success in live performances. On another MS54 note, I am eagerly awaiting their next Velvetine release with Aruna, so keep your ears open for that one.

The journey back through time continues with this highly educational mix put together by Matthias Paul, better known as Paul van Dyk. Before Armin’s Universal Religion, there was PvD’s Politics of Dancing. This is PvD’s very first official mix album, and it came out in 2001 under the Ministry of Sound label. Like most of his older sets, this album contains a nice mix of house, trance, and even some breakbeats. This variety is blended beautifully together with great mixing and post-production touches. Make sure you check out the inside sleeve for Paul’s concept behind this album. It is a bit idealist, but it does carry a nice positive message for the proliferation of dance music. This was one of the first trance albums I ever purchased, and it still holds value even today. Some of my favorites from this album include Into the Night, Rapture, Dreamland, and Interference. This was a very good introduction into the trance world in 2001, and I would still recommend it to anyone who is curious about this genre of dance music.

The Gallery – 15 Years

Here’s something fun to listen to as it contains a good mix of new and older tracks. The Gallery is a Friday night event which originated in the club Turnmills in the UK 15 years ago. It has hosted some of the greatest DJs in the game, including Judge Jules, Armin, Ferry, and PvD. It was the first after-hours club in the UK when it obtained a 24-hour dance license in the 90’s. Turnmills closed in 2008, and this is when the Gallery moved to the Ministry of Sound in the Elephant & Castle (a major intersection in South London). This special 15-year anniversary release by MOS features tunes mixed together by three residents of The Gallery, including Brit Tall Paul and Gavyn Mytchel. I am sharing the first disc with you, which is flawlessly mixed by Sander van Doorn, who was a resident DJ in 2006.
