Sander van Doorn’s Identity radio show did not always follow the format it currently uses. It used to be just Sander on the decks for one solid hour playing  dark, twisted tunes. Sadly this is not the case anymore, which is why I often dig up these old sets of his. This week we are going way back, all the way to the very first episode of his radio show. In this mix we get a taste of some old school Sander productions, including tracks from his Purple Haze and Sam Sharp aliases. Sander’s excellent version of Armin’s Control Freak and the relatively unknown rework of Breathe show off Sander’s early remixing skills. In fact, the back to back play of Eden to Control Freak is pure bliss. In this set we also see many artists which Sander will feature quite frequently on Identity. New tracks by Marco V, Mojado, Mac Zimms, and Scott Mac always find their way onto Sander’s radio show. When SvD first broke out onto the scene around this time, his work had a personality to it that stood out in a rapidly growing scene. For a great look back at some of this uniqueness, check out this mix or any of the other earlier Identity mixes from 2006-2007.

I haven’t shared many sets from SvD lately so here’s a recent one of his recorded from Energy 2011. I love how there’s multiple unknown tracks which means the audience was treated to some really special tunes. There is lots of cool stuff from Doorn Records in this mix, including Hale Bopp and a couple of tracks from Nicky Romero. My favorite sequence of tracks is from #4-8 as Sander plays jam after jam. Of course the mixing is flawless, and the energy is great from start to finish. You can never get enough SvD in your life, check out this great mix below.

Fucking awesome video from the night (courtesy of SvDTV). ID’s need to be updated.

Here’s a throwback mix from Sander’s Identity radioshow from back in 2007. This was back when the Identity series was sick, with a full hour of SvD on the tables. Now, the stream of his show goes something like this:

1. play some random new tracks
2. play the top three new tracks
3. play a classic track (occasionally)
4. play a 30 minute mix from either himself or a guest mixer

I get what he’s trying to do with his new podcast, but I think it’s losing a lot of its flare with this new format. Before this change, I would listen from start to end and enjoy all the goodies that Sander deemed worthy. On top of that, the mixing was phenomenal which served as a great inspiration to me. Now, the only part of his monthly mix that I really look forward to is last 30 minutes. Even then, I don’t think the track selection is as impressive as it used to be. It just doesn’t seem like Sander is trying as hard to find cool new tracks, and he has resorted to playing the public’s favorite tunes one after the other, half of the time without mixing them. What gives Sander? Why can’t you still do what you do in the clubs on the radio show? Episodes 1-39 were pure genius and I did not see a reason why that had to end. I’ll admit I don’t get as excited when the new Identity rolls around each month, but I still do take a listen. Oh well, at least he still throws it down when he’s mixing live, but I’m still sad that the show’s layout has changed for the worse. Anyway, take a listen to one of my favorite Identity shows of all time below. It definitely gets me nostalgic listening to all of these great songs, and it also shows Sander’s versatility as he spins techno, house, and trance all within the hour.
