Throwback Thursday – Sander van Doorn Essential Mix 2009

Hello friends, I hope you all are enjoying the new year so far. For today, let’s go back to 2009 for an Essential Mix put together by Sander van Doorn. I believe 2009-2010 were the last couple of years in which Sander played mostly techy tunes before he changed up his style. He has always been known for playing quality stuff regardless of the genre, however recently it seems like he has been bitten by the electro bug as his sets feature considerably more electro-house. I prefer his older style more, but you can’t blame a guy for diversifying his sound. This mix has 5 SvD productions/remixes, including the very hot Bliksem made under his revived Purple Haze alias. The SvD remix of The Killers’ Spaceman was also another big jam in 2009, as was Bastillon towards the end of the year. Some other favorites of mine are Sasha’s remix of Jetstream and Marco V’s Digital Enemy. Markus’ Chinook was another monster and the Simmons & Machiavelli remix of Omen is another wild one. 2009 was also the breakthrough year for Ummet Ozcan, a talented Doorn Records producer, and his mix of Ronald van Gelderen’s Backstabberzz can be found at the end of the show. You will find Sander’s usual crisp and flawless mixing throughout this set as he starts with house and ends with trance. It’s a good thing we still have these older SvD mixes to fall back on because the tracklists are money and the performances are exceptional. The New Year’s eve celebrations continue with this performance by Markus Schulz. For this year’s party, he was invited to play at the Metro Theater in Sydney, Australia. Markus headlined the event and spun alongside Thomas Knight, MaRLo, and Nick Arbor as they brought in the new year together. This tracklist is packed with great songs and it paints an impressive picture of the direction Coldharbour Recordings is headed. Numerous productions by Khomha, Beat Service, and of course Dakota show how hot the Global DJ Broadcast has become. Markus’ Universal Hypercombo mashup has been my favorite this past year, so it is the highlight of this mix for me. The ID immediately right after that (Track 11 from Transmission Digital Madness Set) is also massive. At the end of the broadcast there is an extra three-track mix, which includes Johnny Yono’s Fairfax, one my favorites at the moment. What a great start to kick off 2012 for the Global DJ Broadcast, I hope you enjoy this partial recordings of Markus’ set from the night.

Flashback Friday – Markus Schulz Live at Together As One (NYE 2009)

The Together As One party thrown by GoVentures has become a staple New Year’s eve party here in Southern California. At the end of 2009, on a night that featured music from David Guetta, John Digweed, Dubfire, Marcus Schossow, Kaskade, and Sander Kleinenberg, Markus Schulz’ set was easily one of the better ones. Here is the recording of his performance from Los Angeles, played on a world tour episode of the Global DJ Broadcast. Markus plays plenty of hits from 2009, including some of my favorites like his reconstruction of Stranger to Stability, Brace Yourself, Pong, and Mainstage. Big parties like these usually call for a lot of crowd favorites, and I’m sure many people were pleased to hear the mashups On a Metropolis Day and Lost Vocal Connection. I wasn’t there for that this party, but many of my friends told me Markus played the best set. Check out the official video underneath the music.

Gareth Emery – Live at The Warehouse Project

You gotta love these live extended sets because they really show what a DJ can do on the tables. On Boxing day of 2011, Gareth Emery played a 6 hour set at The Warehouse Project in Manchester, England, which is the city he currently works out of. This set is impressively long, however it seems like Gareth has been bitten by the popularity bug. While his performance is fun to listen to, there aren’t many too many new or unreleased tracks in here. I guess you have to spin all of the popular hits in a long set like this, but I wish he played with more originality like he used to towards the beginning of his career. However, this mix still has that signature Gareth Emery feel to it, and I do appreciate the selection of several techy tracks which balance with the electro nicely. There are plenty of tracks off his Garuda label, including work by Garuda artists Ben Gold, Craig Connelly, and Tritonal. There are also many mashups in here, with my favorite being the Super8 & Tab Helektra mashup of their own productions Elektra and Helsinki Scorchin. This recording is a great representation of Gareth’s work in 2011, but if you are still yearning for more from Mr. GTR, make sure you also check out episode 165 of his podcast for his 2011 year-mix.

Happy 2012 everybody, I hope you all had a good break as we get ready to kick off the new year. I’m still in catch-up mode, so let’s keep the Armada train rolling along with this super long set from Mr. Armin van Buuren. Back in November, Armin played a 6 hour set at the DC Armory, a large arena which used to be the training facility for the DC National Guard. Recently it has been hosting a variety of entertainment events, including sports games, parties, and concerts. This particular event was thrown by DC”s Glow club/promotion company, hence the title SuperGlow. The tracklist is pretty standard fare, with all the usual ASOT hits incorporated into the mix. Flashback Friday – Global DJ Broadcast Classics 2011

It has been an excellent month for the Global DJ Broadcast and there is no better way to end it than with the annual Classics episode. 2011 was a hot year for Markus Schulz, and he concludes it with this special show. In this mix you will find a true collection of throwbacks, with the majority of the songs produced in the 90′s (only 8 songs in here were made after 2000). Jam & Spoon’s Odyssey to Anyoona goes all the way back to 1994, and the intro track Paladian Dawn was produced over 16 years ago in 1995. Similar to the 2005 Classics showcase, this episode contains vintage oldies like Matt Darey’s Game Master, Remember Magnetic North, and Tilt’s Courtyard rework of Robert Miles’ Children. This year’s show also includes Sasha’s Xpander and the Nalin & Kane remix of Lustral’s Everytime, except in the 2005 episode these two were mashed up together splendidly. Of course Probspot’s Blueberry made it into the tracklist again, further cementing it as one of the greatest progressive tunes of all time. My favorite segment is when Markus mixes from First Time into Xpander and then into Blueberry, what an awesome three song combo. Silver Bath and Remember when Oakenfold produced Skin on Skin while he was in the group Grace, or when Ferry Corsten released Galaxia under the Moonman alias? If you do, you will certainly enjoy the following set as Markus skillfully brings us back to the late 90′s.

The Gallery – Christmas Party 2011

The last 2011 party at The Gallery was a big one, as it featured several big names in its lineup. The main room at the Ministry of Sound Christmas party was stacked as it hosted Cosmic Gate, Markus Schulz, Rank 1, Jochen Miller, and Andy Moor. Nic and Bossi are currently on their Wake Your Mind tour, so their set was appropriately filled with songs from the new album. Pretty predictable, but very consistent. Andy Moor’s set was decent, with the track 3 ID and the 2011 rework of Air for Life as the highlights. My favorite set of the night is Markus’ because of the impressive tracklist. The mashups and IDs that he played really stand out as crowd pleasing moments. Closing out the night was a special back to back set featuring Rank 1 and Jochen Miller. Their song selection is great, however the mixing is a bit spotty. Solid planning, average execution. Nevertheless, it’s still pretty amazing to experience these back 2 back sets because you get double the creativity when the styles are compatible. Here is an enjoyable little party mix from British producer/DJ Michael Woods. This Essential Mix is a nice year-end compilation of Michael’s favorite tunes from 2011. Although there are a few mind-numbingly overplayed tracks in here, the finished product is still a fun and entertaining listen. Don’t expect much depth to this, what Mr. Woods provides is an expert look at the best commercial house from the past year. This plays along exactly like one of his live sets, which means the energy is high as he keeps the party bumpin.
