FUCK MY LIFE to the max! An orchestral interpretation of trance music??? This is definitely one of my dreams come true… Here is the excerpt taken from Armin’s website:
Sometimes, the boundaries of two different music genres fade. On March 4th and 5th, a Dutch orchestra called Noord Nederlands Orkest, will play the classical interpretations of Armin van Buuren during two concerts. From ‘Communication’ to ‘Serenity’ and ‘In & Out of Love’, a big selection of his catalogue will be translated into classical compositions.
Armin:”I think this is a great initiative. Two different worlds that seem difficult to join, but I believe that this can lead to something new. I strongly believe that the NNO is doing a great job with this ambitious idea. There’s been a lot of flirting between these two styles (classical and trance), but for the first time this is really happening. Fantastic!”
The Dutch cities of Leeuwarden and Groningen will be treated to a late-night concert with official afterparty. Tickets are only € 15 or € 7,50 if you’re a student. Armin is convinced that his fans will love these special concerts. Armin:”Trance music sometimes touches classical music. I wouldn’t compare myself with classical composers, but the euphoric feeling I get when listening to some classical pieces is similar to the feeling I get when I listen to trance. I hope these concerts opens doors to those who normally don’t open these doors. I am convinced that trance lovers also love classical music en vice versa.”
Armin is spot on about the relationship between trance and classical music, and as an avid fan of both genres, I really, REALLY hope that this performance will be released on a CD!
The last video I posted up got me feeling a bit nostalgic for some great old school sets. Here are a pair of really complete mixes from two highly distinguished names in the game. The first is an essential mix by Sasha & Digweed from back in 2004, and the second one is an essential mix from Sander van Doorn in 2006. Essential Mixes have been a BBC Radio 1 staple since its introduction in 1993, where DJs have been invited by Pete Tong to showcase their current favorite tracks. At the end of each year listeners vote for their favorite mix, which becomes the Essential Mix of the year. Neither of these two mixes that I have uploaded won for best of the year, but I really like tracklists for both of them. Take a step back in time and enjoy the mixes below!

Here is a sweet video from the Dance Valley Festival on August 6th, 2005 in the Spaarnwoude, the Netherlands . Paul van Dyk was just one of the headliners for this three day event, others include Carl Cox, Sasha, Christopher Lawrence, Above & Beyond, Marcel Woods, Deep Dish, Ferry Corsten, Steve Lawler, Hernan Cattaneo, and many more. What’s interesting is that this “Woodstock of Dance” was held at a campsite, so attendees who bought tickets for the entire weekend were able to camp out for two nights. There was even a marketplace for people to buy supplies and showers for people to stay clean. I love this set because PvD really throws it down hard, which is something I have not heard from him in a while. Enjoy the video below…

I have been waiting for this album to come out for a while, and I finally got a hold of it a few days ago. The original album was highly successful, with many of tracks being played/remixed by other professionals. It was the best vocal-trance album released last year, as JOC never does a bad job with vocal trance. So, what happens when an album achieves as much success as this one did? Answer: a remix album is made! The first thing that caught my attention was the number of songs in the album. With 27 full length tracks in total, this album surely packs a lot of great tunes into one place. There are actually only 11 different songs in this album, but most of them have more than 2 remixes to them. JOC has come a long way in his career, and he is finally getting some major recognition with the release of his own Subculture Label (a subgroup of Armada). What’s surprising is that his work on this album is abundant in vocals, but his sets are notably brimming with high energy. They remind me of the driving sets that PvD used to bang out back in the day. Here are a few of my favorite from the album:
JOC – Never Fade Away feat. Lo-Fi Sugar(Andy Duguid Remix)
The single for Never Fade Away was released in August of 2009, so this song was played a lot during that time. The Giuseppe Ottaviani is fast, but Andy Duguid’s version is more chilled and relaxing, kind of like a beach track. It’s pretty much a great opening song for any set or album. JOC – Every Lesson Learned feat. Lo-Fi Sugar (Matt Hardwick Remix)
This is my favorite remix from the album. I’m not sure what it is about it, but the beat just puts me in a good mood. I also love the voice of Lo-Fi Sugar, and I think she does a great job on this one. Her singing matches beautifully with the hypnotic music. JOC- Find Yourself feat. Sarah Howells (Heatbeat Remix – JOC rework) This was the first single released off of the original album. You may have already heard the Cosmic Gate remix of this song, which received pretty heavy airplay. I like this remix because its a little bit harder than the original. JOC – Big Sky feat. Audrey Gallagher (Markus Schulz Remix) The Agnelli & Nelson remixof this song was probably the most overplayed track in 2007, but it still sounds good after you haven’t listened to it in a while. I’m not sure why this song was included in this album (since it wasn’t technically released in the first one), but Markus does a nice job on the remix. This version contains some piano work in the middle and is a bit slower, so I still prefer the A&N remix. JOC – Out of Nowhere feat. Josie (Stoneface & Terminal Remix)
This is just a solid track all around. Great music, great vocals, great production. JOC – Take It All Away feat. Audrey Gallagher (Timmy & Tommy Remix) Here is another track feating the nice vocals of Audrey Gallagher. There are actually 6 versions of this song on the album, and most of them are good. Also check out the Full Tilt remix along with the Marcus Schossow version. JOC – Don’t Look Back (Sly One vs. Jurrane Remix)
This song reminds me of old school JOC. Sly One and Jurrane are coming up as one of Discover Records standout artists, and they leave a nice touch on this remix. I love it when JOC teams up with other Discover artists, as the resulting tracks are always trance bombs! Also check out the John Askew remix, which is great as well. JOC & Giuseppe Ottaviani - Liquid Fire (Thomas Bronzwaer & Kristina Sky Remix)
Whenever there are 4 people who work together on the same song, the resulting product will usually sound pretty damn good. This one is not bad; I like the build up but I feel there could be more added to the song. Also check out the Temple One remix, which is a little bit more melodic but more or less the same thing. JOC – Broken (Bryan Kearney Remix)
I love it when these two guys get together on a track. This is the hardest song on the album, and it does not dissapoint. The Mark Kavanagh remix is not bad as well, but I like this one more.
Here is the latest single from Marco V, found on Propoganda 2 under his own label, In Charge . Last year was a busy one for this man as he released Propoganda 2 and embarked on a tour to promote the album. When I saw him a few months back, I was surprised that this short, bald little guy could throw down such mean set! Jokes aside, I have been a Marco fan for quite a while, ever since the release of his 200V album in 2005, and this was the first time I heard him spin live. His sets are equally as enjoyable as his productions, and this latest track fails to diverge from this trend. The song features the vocals of New Yorker Jonathan Mendelsohn, who has a lot of experience with vocal tracks (he is one-half of the production crew Wamdue Project which made King of My Castle). Recently, you have probably heard him on Nic Chagall’s This Moment. If you haven’t yet, try to check out Marco V’s Propoganda 2 for some more killer beats such as this one.
Marco V – Coming Back (Extended Mix) Here is the original version released on the studio album. Marco does a great job building up the vocals and matching them with the music. Marco V – Coming Back (Nic Chagall Remix) Nic Chagall takes his turn at remixing for one of the best producers in the game, and this remix is pretty good. This version doesn’t hit as hard as the original beat, but it has a more proggy, uplifting feel to it. It sounds similar to This Moment, and I have a feeling they were both produced around the same time. Marco V – Coming Back (Redub) This is my favorite version of the song. I believe this song stands fine by itself: no vocals necessary. The beat is my favorite part and the breakdown is pretty sav.
Here is the first installment of what I expect to be an annual mix from Gareth Emery, released on his Garuda Records. Disc 1 is titled 2010 and it contains ‘newer’ tracks from 2009. I know I am late with this review (the album was released at the end of November), but most of these songs have already received a lot of airplay from other DJs. The second disc is pretty much the best of 2009 through the ears of Gareth Emery. I like the tracklist of disc 2; it contains a lot of songs I also consider to be the best of 2009. The only problem that I have is some of these songs were released in 2008, but I guess that is forgivable. The mixing is solid, and the songs flow well from one to the next. The style is typical Gareth, which may or may not be your cup of tea, but is definitely unique. There are plenty of heavy leads and thick, chunky basslines to satisfy your electro-trance cravings. Interesting tracks include the Cosmic Gate and Marvo V mashup, and the Lethal Industry/Stadium Four/Professional Killers mashup.

Here are a handful of songs to start the new year off right. Actually some of them came out in 2009, but I haven’t had much time to put them into any mixes so I will post them up here. I have included a few remixes of some vocal tracks, a few of which are old school rock songs that I find pretty interesting. I hope everyone had a great new year’s and check back soon for some new mixes in the next few weeks!
Sander van Doorn – Renegade (Club Edit)
This is the official anthem for Trance Energy 2010. Speaking of which, have y’all seen the lineup for this event? Freaking CRAZY! Check out trance.nu for a complete event preview. The lineup seriously makes my ears drool… TyDi – Good Dream (Barnes & Heatcliff Remix)
Here’s another great piece of remix work by B&H. I could seriously get used to these three artists working together for a while. Talla 2XLC – Terra Australis feat. Skysurfer (Jorn van Deynhoven Remix) This is a great example of some beautiful progressive trance. Jorn van Deynhoven had a great year in 2009, and this track fails to dissapoint. It’s not as sick as his RAMsterdam remix, but definitely shows what he can do production-wise. Jes – Love Song (Cosmic Gate Remix) I first heard this track on an ASOT a few months ago. Jes gives us her great interpretation of the often-covered cult classic by The Cure. Cosmic Gate adds their signature bassline on the remix. Jes – Love Song (Daniel Wanrooy & Mark Green Remix) Here is another interpretation of the Jes cover. Daniel Wanrooy and Mark Green have been around for a while, leaving their mark on Tiesto’s Magik Music label. They have been producing and DJing under the radar for a while, mainly keeping their popularity within the Dutch borders. Mark Green is actually the A&R manager for Black Hole, and Daniel Wanrooy has recently started to break out with a few popular productions. Good job on the remix by these two. Everything But the Girl – Missing (Greg Downey Remix) Pretty interesting remix from Greg Downey. I haven’t heard much new material from him, but this song definitely caught my attention. This 1994 classic by Everything But the Girl received the first dance-remix by Todd Terry, and the song blew up from there. Greg Downey gives us his version of the song on this remix. As you may notice, this song was ripped from an episode of TATW, so the quality isn’t 320kbps. Linkin Park – New Divide (Heatbeat Bootleg)
Here is a bootleg from Argentine producers Heatbeat. I used to be a big fan of Linkin Park back in the day, so this song brings back a lot of memories for me. This is one of their newer tracks, and I believed it was released on the Transformers soundtrack. Commercialized? Yes it is, but not a bad job on the bootleg. JOOP – One (Original Mix)
Dutch tech-trance sensation JOOP has released this new single on High Contrast Recordings. It has been awhile since his 2007 hit The Future, but he continues his hard techy style with his new song. Andain – Beautiful Things (Roger Shah 2010 Remix)
To close out this post, here is a nice 2010 version of the classic by Andain. There have been countless remixes of this song, including a lot of recent ones which were just released. Roger Shah has been a busy man as of late, but his remix here proves he still has time to improve on some throwbacks.
Here is a set from three of the best names in the game. All the tracks were chosen by fan voters, so technically the tracklist belongs to them. This set consists of all the top hits which were played throughout the history of theTrance Around the World series. There are also a lot of commendations and shoutouts from various DJs/producers, which is always nice to hear. Not surprisingly, most of the tracks were released on the Anjunabeats label; however, I was very pleased to hear that one of my favorite songs of all time was chosen to kick off the set. Congrats to A&B for having such a great, long-standing radio show which has introduced me to a lot of great songs. For everyone going to Giant Hotel and 1015, this is a nice little mix to get you in the mood. I hope you all have a fun filled and safe new year’s eve!

Here is the annual end-of-the-year mix by Armin van Buuren, showcasing all the best tracks from this year’s A State of Trance radio shows. As expected, there is a lot of ‘cheese’ in this mix, but fortunately a lot of my favorites are also included. Armin can’t appeal to every single person right? That’s pretty damn near impossible. He does a great job with this mix, incorporating a wide range of styles into it. Most of these tracks have already received heavy airplay in this year’s shows, so there is really nothing new in this album. There are no official mashups either, which is a little bit disappointing. But, the mixing makes up for whatever the tracklist is missing, as Armin overlays all of the tracks beautifully and the transitions are very impressive. The intro and outro sound like they come straight out of a big concert event. If you are looking for a complete compilation of this year’s hits that flow from one track to the next, this is the best album to get, hands down. Listeners of the weekly ASOT show were allowed to vote for the top 20 of the year, and those results will be broadcasted on December 24th, 2009. The entire year-mix will be played on December 31, 2009, closing out another great year of tunes.

If you lead a busy life like me, you know exactly how hard it is to keep up with all the new songs being produced out there. Fortunately, there are many radio shows out there to keep you updated. There are long sets, such as A State of Trance and Trance Around The World, that are comprehensive and can last up to two hours. Then there are others that are short and straight to the point, where showcasing the artist’s new stuff is the primary focus. Some radio shows feature guest DJs, with a segment of the show dedicated to their guest mix. Often times radio shows will be recorded live (as opposed to a studio mix), and you usually get a different type of performance with these. What’s great about listening to multiple shows is that you become exposed to the whole spectrum of trance music (this also applies to whatever genre of music you listen to). Some sets tend to sound more melodic, others more hard-hitting, etc. Each DJ has their own style and each set will have a different overall feel to it. You can’t say that this particular DJ is good while this other DJ is bad when you haven’t even listened to the latest music both of them are putting out. I have met too many people who are not informed enough to make the distinction between a good and a bad DJ. The best way to educate yourself (other than attending a live event) is to listen to their radio shows. These shows are the easiest way for DJs to stay connected to their listeners, and I highly suggest you check out a few of these every week because not only do you stay in touch with the DJ, but you also become familiarized with all the new songs in the market. Even when I don’t get a chance to listen through all of the sets, I will still look at all the tracklists to see if there is anything new that might sound interesting. Here is a list of all the trance radio shows trance that I try to keep up with:
Armin van Buuren – A State of Trance Above & Beyond – Trance Around the World Markus Schulz – Global DJ Broadcast Menno de Jong – Intuition Radio Aly & Fila – Future Sound of Egypt John O’Callaghan - Subculture Andy Moor- Moor Music DJ Shah – Magic Island: Music for Balearic People Tiesto – Club Life (episode 140) Marcus Schossow - Tone Diary Sean Tyas - Tytanium Sessions (episode 24) Gareth Emery - The Gareth Emery Podcast Sander van Doorn - Identity Eddie Halliwell - Fire It Up Manuel Le Saux - Top 20 Tunes Ferry Corsten – Corsten’s Countdown Paul van Dyk – Vonyc Sessions
You can download or listen live to most of them at alldj or di.fm. Happy listening everyone =)
p.s. Alldj.org is a also great way to explore other genres of music too!
